Security at point of sale becoming a major issue

Whether it’s the theft of your details, your card or even the chip & pin terminal are we keeping up-to-date with the latest security measures?

In recent years contactless credit cards have been issued to all and sundry by banks and others in the financial service industry, with many merchants adopting contactless terminals as a result.  However, the proliferation of these cards has coincided with various reports warning of the increased security threat posed by thieves being able to read the data on your card while it is in your pocket.  It must be said however, that those warning of the threat usually follow it up with a sales pitch for a product that can prevent your card from being read.

With over 20 million of these cards issued and over 80,000 card readers out there it is worth asking the question; are contactless credit cards more vulnerable to theft?

Keylocked for Extra SecurityLet’s start with the technology.  It isn’t very difficult for anyone to knock up their very own contactless card reader as the specifications of any such machine are easily available and the kit is cheap.  Therefore anyone that gets close enough to a contactless card holder, (usually within 10cm) can access the free read data from the card itself.  What cannot be read via the contactless chip however, is the 3 digit security code on the back of the card as well as the cardholder name, (which can only be obtained by looking at the card itself).

This means that customers are at much greater risk by losing their contactless cards and having them used by fraudsters than they are by having them scanned by someone with a card reader.  The increased messages of contactless card holders being under threat due to ‘sniffing’ are more than likely scaremonger tactics banded about by those with an ulterior motive.  This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be vigilant at all times, but then again hasn’t this always been the case?  After all credit/debit card transactions of all kinds come with their very own risks so being careful is really a pre-requisite where these things are concerned.

Cable Tethered for Extra SecurityThere is no doubt however, that security at point of sale is becoming a major issue.  It is therefore absolutely vital for customers and merchants that the terminals & chip & pin stands are as secure as possible.  At PPR Engineering we understand that in the modern retail environment payment terminals and the chip & pin stands have to rise to the challenge and remain durable, resilient and secure while at the same time provide a slick and user friendly customer interface.

We understand the vigorous demands placed upon POS equipment – this has driven us to design and manufacture a wide range of chip & pin stands. We provide a range of stands for a variety of manufacturers including Verifone, Gemalto, Ingenico, Spire Payments and Thyron Systems.

Not only are our chip & pin stands designed and manufactured to the highest standards, they’ve also been built with security in mind.

The UK Cards Association:

“Consideration must be given to the physical protection of point of sale devices.. secure cradles should be used to minimise opportunities for theft”

Advantages of using Chip & Pin Stands are:

  • Our chip & pin stands are protected as it is not constantly being picked up and dropped onto the counter top during each transaction – causing potential damage to the internal electronics
  • The cables are neatly routed through the stands for a clean counter top.
  • The position of chip & pin stands can be manipulated to suit all customer requirements
  • Chip & pin stands allow the PINpad to be positioned to give the best security whilst entering PIN number to avoid ‘shoulder surfing’

For many years we have provided our customers with a range of the most secure chip & pin stands currently available.  Throughout this time we have developed and manufactured chip & pin stands designed to cope with the many rigorous demands placed on them in the current climate; all the while remaining functional, strong and simple to use.

So, when all is said and done, the best way of avoiding theft/fraud and keeping your customers happy is by purchasing terminals and chip & pin stands that has been innovatively designed to combat theft.  You can do just that by contacting PPR Engineering.
